What do we study in PSHE at Ridgeway?
How do we explore Ridgeway 360° through PSHE?
R360° education at Ridgeway Secondary School is a planned, developmental programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. The curriculum is explicitly linked to the school’s ethos of Ridgeway 360 and follows key themes as supported by the PSHE association.
As part of a whole-school approach, R360° education develops the qualities and attributes students need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. R360° education can help the school to reduce or remove many of the barriers to learning experienced by students, significantly improving their capacity to learn and achieve. The programme makes a significant contribution to students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour and safety and the school’s statutory responsibility to promote students’ well-being. In addition, the learning provided through a comprehensive PSHE education provision is an essential to safeguarding students, as Ofsted has set out.
R360° education equips pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. It encourages them to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and in achieving economic well-being. A critical component is providing opportunities for children and young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they will encounter now and in the future.
R360° education contributes to personal development by helping students to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, and to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions. It enables them to recognise, accept and shape their identities, to understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings. Developing an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others will help students to form and maintain good relationships, develop the essential skills for future employability and better enjoy and manage their lives.
The curriculum is also further supported by topics that are delivered through other curriculum areas such as: History, Geography, RE and English.
Why do we study R360°?
At Ridgeway we use R360° to refer to our taught Personal Development curriculum. Personal Development is at the centre of our school ethos and across all key stages, curriculum time is allocated to deliver a thematic, well sequenced, age appropriate and context specific PSHE curriculum linked closely to the national curriculum, where the elements of Ridgeway 360 are explicitly taught. This gives a deep understanding of key societal issues and how to approach them.
Through this curriculum, we aim to support our students to explore beliefs with respect and reflection and consider moral and ethical issues respectfully and sensitively. Students also learn about well-being and positive mental health, along with information relating to their own development as people and building healthy relationships. Students are shown how to become successful learners and are given age-related careers information, advice and guidance. Throughout the academic year the sequencing of the curriculum remains agile due to the schools desire to reflect and adapt to its contextual issues in the community which ensures there is always an intent to place safeguarding at the forefront of our approach.

How can parents and guardians support at home?
There are a range of ways in which parents and guardians can support students at home. By regularly checking the delivery grid to see what will be studied that half term, relevant conversations to prepare for students for the discussions that may take place in lessons can be facilitated at home. This will also support development of their opinions on content covered, further developing their wider understanding of their role in the world considerably.
Homework
Homework is set to enhance the understanding of new topics by researching and pre reading on particularly complex topics.
Enrichment opportunities
Our safeguarding governor is a wellbeing and mental health specialists and visits school regularly to monitor and enhance the curriculum as well as numerous guest speakers and visitors are invited into school throughout the year, during lessons and on Transition Days, to support students’ learning and understanding further. Engagement with a range of charities and organisations broadens student cultural capital and allows them to become well-rounded and informed citizens through robust CIAG and work experience in Year 10.
