At Ridgeway Secondary School, we believe that:

– Homework teaches students how to problem solve.

– Homework gives students another opportunity to review class material.

– Homework gives parents a chance to see what is being learned in school. Homework teaches students how to take responsibility for their part in the educational process.

– Homework should be pre-planned (not finishing class activities) and linked directly to the curriculum. This will be evident in schemes of work for each unit.

Homework Expectations 2023-2024

Continuing tasks can be set over a number of weeks but work will be monitored on a regular basis and appropriate sanctions applied if work is not completed within the time frame.

Students will normally be given, on average, a week to complete their homework task.  Work maybe set by a variety of methods depending on the subject. These may include paper-based worksheets or exam questions, work in an exercise / sketch book, reading, tasks set through Teams or work through other subject specific websites eg. Doodle, Seneca, My Maths etc. Details of where the task is set will be provided to students and instructions will be found on EPraise for each task set. Staff will also explore the opportunity for extended writing tasks, where relevant.

*Please note that several foundation subjects at KS3 will set project-based work throughout a unit of work. Deadlines will be given at the start of releasing the project details.

Teaching staff will ensure that feedback occurs for homework in a variety of ways. This may be by using rewards through EPraise, peer/self-assessing work in class or teacher marking, where appropriate. Extended writing pieces for English will have more detailed feedback when appropriate. Not all homework pieces will be marked individually.
