Year 10 Work Experience

Dear Parents/Guardians,

After a very successful first Work Experience week last year, we are pleased to tell you that we are able to offer all Year 10 students the opportunity of taking part in Work Experience.  This would not be able to take place without the support of local employers and we are grateful to them for making it possible. Work Experience takes many months to organise and there is great competition for some workplaces.  For this reason, it is important to start the process as early as possible.

Work Experience offers students the chance to try themselves out in a variety of situations and gives them some insight into the demands, which will be made upon them when they leave full time education.

It is a requirement that all Key Stage 4 students go on Work Experience and it has historically been proven that students are more focused on their education after having completed their Work Experience.

Due to the amount of time it takes to find suitable placements for students, students are encouraged to source their own placements with the full support of the school.  This will help to ensure that they get the placement that they want and will mean that the placement is more suited to their future career choice.  Although it is not always possible for students to carry out their Work Experience where they want or in the area they want, Work Experience is designed for students to experience the world of work and if your child is not able to go where they wish, they will still gain valuable experience and insight into the world of work wherever they go.

We are working closely with Heart of Worcestershire college who are providing a level 6 qualified careers adviser to work one day a week at Ridgeway Secondary School. Every student in Year 10 will have a 1 to 1 meeting with the careers adviser in order to help with their work experience and their future career choices.

Young people taking part in Work Experience are not entitled to the benefit of the National Insurance Act, a modest personal injury insurance, which covers students in case of accidental injury, will be in place.  Additionally, the company providing the placement must have Employers Liability Insurance in place for injury arising from proven negligence or breach of statutory duty by the company or its employees.

Students will not be paid for Work Experience and will not receive any reimbursement for any costs incurred whilst on their placement.  They will only be allowed to work a maximum of 8 hours a day and must comply with the Health and Safety regulations of the organisation, which includes wearing any safety clothing that is considered necessary or required by law.

The school need parental/guardian consent for students to carry out their work experience, please fill in the attached form and return to the school by 6th December 2019.

Parental Briefing


The work experience programme is designed to give young people first-hand experience of the world of work.  It aims to:

  • Increase student’s self-confidence and maturity
  • Encourage students to demonstrate initiative and self-reliance
  • Help students to have a better understanding of the world of work
  • Give students a better understanding of particular jobs and careers
  • Help students make informed career choices
  • Enable students to experience the importance of team work
  • Help students understand the relevance and importance of key skills

How Parent/Guardians can help



  • Discuss with them their ideas for their placement
  • Once the placement has been arranged, encourage your child to contact the employers to arrange a pre-interview. This will be to set targets, introduce them to the workplace and raise awareness of health and safety issues.
  • Ensure that you and your child know:
  • The hours of work during the placement, these will be the organisations working hours and may include shifts in areas such as hospitality, leisure etc.
  • How they will get to and from the workplace, it is not the schools responsibility to arrange transport.
  • What they should wear
  • Break and mealtime arrangements
  • Contact name and telephone number



  • Encourage your child to complete their log book daily
  • Inform both the school and the employer if your child is unable to attend
  • To help your child get the most out of their Work Experience, discuss their working day
  • If your child is unhappy (for any reason) please contact the school



  • Complete the Parent/Guardian section in the Logbook
  • Remind your child to hand in their Logbook at school
  • The Work Experience Logbook should then be kept in a safe place for future use.


The School’s Role


  • Students are prepared by the school for their work experience
  • Students will be visited by a school representative whilst on their placement or checked by telephone if out of area.  This visit could take place at any time during the placement week.
  • Students are de-briefed after their placement and their Logbooks endorsed by the tutor.
