All secondary schools have been sent a copy of a new film, ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’, by Peter Jackson (director of Lord of the Rings.) He was charged by The Imperial War Museum in conjunction with the BBC with creating a lasting memorial of events of World War One, using archive footage including film and interviews with soldiers. As a result he has been able to colourise, add sound to and bring to life a valuable source of historical information about life for soldiers during ‘The Great War’.
The film has been classified with a certificate of fifteen, however, it has been suggested that schools may wish to show it to students in KS3 and 4. Therefore, over the coming history lessons, form time or PSHE lessons, year eight nine and ten students will have the opportunity to benefit from this emotive and insightful learning resource.
The film contains scenes of war and destruction along with contextual language of young soldiers. It will be shown on BBC2 on Sunday 11th November at 9.30pm should you wish to watch it for yourselves. If you have any objections to allowing your child to watch this, please contact your child’s history teacher (Y8,) or form teacher (Y9 and 10.)
Thank you for your ongoing support with the learning of our students.
